A trade name is the lawful name for your business in Abu Dhabi. It is your business’s legal name and often is essential in order for you to apply for a business license. It also aids in setting your brand apart from competitors. 

Yes, the DED (Department of Economic Development) in Abu Dhabi  mandates all businesses to book a trade name before starting the company registration or license process. 

The standard fee for a trade name reservation is AED 620, however, additional charges could also be applicable for certain types of names (foreign language names, abbreviations, or premium names). 

Trade name applications are typically approved by the DED within 1 to 2 business days of submission, assuming all requirements are satisfied. 

The reservation of approved trade name is for a period of 180 days (6 months). In the meantime go ahead and namesecure the business. 

Names can be refused if: 

  • Offend public morals or the religious sentiment. 
  • Include political, military and religious terms. 
  • Be duplicates of or closely resemble company names that are already in use 
  • Draw on abbreviations or import brand names without permission
